چکیده

-Index sites of breast and cervix uteri were selected from populationbased data held at the West Midlands and Birmingham Regional Cancer Registry, and the expected numbers of second primary cancers in cervix and breast were computed (sequence analyses). In the breast series (17,756 patients) a small deficit of cervical tumours was observed (0=16, E=2-119, O/E=0-76, P>0005), while in the cervix series (4817 patients) a small excess of breast tumours was found (0=29, E=23-38, O/E=1P24, P>0 05) over a period of 15 years. A theoretical statement of the combined risk of the 2 tumours occurring in the same individual of a general population was developed and was compared with the practical approach of summing the sequence analyses (complementary analysis). Complementary analysis indicated that there was no excess of women with the 2 primary tumours (0=45, E=44-57, O/E=1-01) and that cancers of the breast and cervix uteri are not aetiologically related.

Anticarcinogenic property of medicinal plants: Involvement of antioxidant role

Carcinogens are involved in carcinogenesis, mutagenesis and genotoxicity. One of the best ways to minimize the detrimental effects of carcinogens is by the use of medicinal plants i.e., natural anticarcinogens. Naturally occurring anticarcinogenic principles present in medicinal plants, human diet have protective effects against carcinogens. These include flavonoids, phenolics, coumarins, carot...

Cancer-promoting and Inhibiting Effects of Dietary Compounds: Role of the Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (AhR)

Polyaromatic hydrocarbons, heterocyclic aromatic amines and dioxin-like compounds are environmental carcinogens shown to initiate cancer in a number of tissue types including prostate and breast. These environmental carcinogens elicit their effects through interacting with the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), a ligand activated transcription factor. Naturally occurring compounds found in fruits...

Chemical carcinogenesis: too many rodent carcinogens.

The administration of chemicals at the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) in standard animal cancer tests is postulated to increase cell division (mitogenesis), which in turn increases rates of mutagenesis and thus carcinogenesis. The animal data are consistent with this mechanism, because a high proportion--about half--of all chemicals tested (whether natural or synthetic) are indeed rodent carcinog...

The dimethylhydrazine induced colorectal tumours in rat - experimental colorectal carcinogenesis

The beginnings of the first animal model appreciated for its macroscopic and histological similarity to human colorectal carcinoma (CRC) extend to 1963, when Laqueur discovered that rats fed cycasin, a plant product, developed intestinal cancer. The active substance was identified and soon a similar compound, methylazoxymethanol acetate (MAMA) was synthesized that was more effective than the na...
